Week of 1/14 - 17 (No school on Friday the 18th)

This week: 
Our annual Pastries for Parents will be Thursday, January 17th from 7:45-8:45 am.

During this event, parents are invited to join their children at school for a light breakfast. Shirley Hills teachers will be serving pastries, fruit & beverages.

In conjunction with Caring for Our Community Month, we will be collecting snacks for the Ronald McDonald House. Children will be writing notes and decorating bags for the snacks during the event. Rory and Mrs. Moen have a presentation for the whole 2nd grade group!

Morning Meeting Schedule: Each student will have a time where they can share.  We will start with a greeting and then students will have two minutes to tell a story, show or talk about something they would like to bring to share with the class.  They will ask for three questions or comments.  If they are bringing in an item to share, it must fit in their backpack.
Here is our schedule:

Mondays: Davis, Nolan, Audrey and Connor Jackson Kaia
Tuesdays: Lizzie, Brayden, Josiah and Elias Rein
Wednesdays: Emmy D., Owen, Julia and North Amelia
Thursdays: Genevieve, Alonso, Emily O., Caden and Rory Barbara
Fridays: NO SCHOOL so
Jackson and Kaia will share on Monday 
Rein will share on Tuesday
Amelia will share on Wednesday
Barbara will share on Thursday

Reading: Unit 5 - Skill: Connections & Inferencing:
We will continue working on Inferencing. The unit will include students making inferences and connections. Making an inference means figuring out something that is not stated directly in a text. An inference is based on one or two clues in the text. Authors do not always tell readers everything, but they include clues that readers can put together for themselves.  Making inferences helps readers better understand the ideas in a text.

The Daily Five in Reading:

*Read to Self:  Read! Read! Read!

*Read to Someone: Reading to someone

*Listen to Reading: Working on RazKids, Tumblebooks

*Work on Writing: working on blends, Spelling City, blending puzzles and blending game, write 
  spelling words in sentences and we will start a research writing assignment.

*Word Work - working on fluency with reading passages

In Math:

We will be starting Unit 7 - Graphing.  Your child will learn how to create and read picture graphs, bar graphs, circle graphs and tables.

Social Studies: We are learning about goods and services.

Thursday:     Day 6 - You can wear a hat or have wacky hair!
Friday:          No school - Sorry!  I sent out and email saying we would be going skating on Friday.  I made a mistake!  No school on Friday.  Hopefully weather permitting we will skate on Tuesday, Jan. 22 (No School on Monday, 1/21)

On Day 3 we go to: Media and Gym

On Day 4 we go to: Art (Please have your child bring back their library book so they can check out a new one on Day 5)

Help your child remember to bring back their Friday Folders on Monday and bring a healthy snack every day!
