We will be starting our first full week! Last week went great! We will revisit our classroom expectations and SOAR in the hallway, lunchroom and playground! Monday the students will take the Fast Reading Test and on Tuesday we will take the Fast Math Test. We will be starting our first Unit in Reading and will be talking about Main Ideas and Details. We will start learning about how our brain works in our Social and Emotional Learning time and in Math we will continue working on adding and subtraction within 20. Please help your child remember to bring back their Friday Folders on Monday and bring a healthy snack every day!
This week we will focus on:
Phonics/Sight Words: Lessons 5 - 9
Lesson 5: practices short a and i words. The students will have their first Spelling Mastery Test on Monday. We have been practicing words with the short a and i sounds. Students will be given 20 words to show mastery of these sounds.

news in second grade: we are beginning our first Benchmark Unit! The comprehension skill we will focus on
throughout the next three weeks is Main
Idea and Details. The main idea
is what a paragraph, passage, or story is about. Supporting details describe or explain the
main idea. Students will soon learn that
recognizing main ideas help them remember important information while details
help them understand the main idea.
The Daily Five in Reading:
*Read to Self: Read! Read! Read!
*Read to Someone: Reading to a partner
*Listen to Reading: Working in RazKids, Tumblebooks and Reading Eggs
*Work on Writing: Writing in our journals - students will be given a prompt, working on Daily Oral

*Word Work: working on sight words
Lunch/Recess is from 12:20 to 1:00
MindUp!/2nd Step:
Our lesson is from MindUp! (Social and Emotional Learning): This week we will be learning about how our brain works. We will be talking about the amygdala (our security guard), prefrontal cortex (our wise leader - helps our thinking and reasoning) and the hippocampus (keeper of memories and learning).
In Math:
We are working on Unit 1. We will be review making a ten to extend their fluency with addition and subtraction to totals through 20. We will create and solve all the types of word problems.
Social Studies/Science: We will start these in the next couple of weeks. We will practice handwriting at the end of our day this week.
